European data startups are ready to take-off
20. May 2019
What kind of concepts and products can we develop from collected data? The EU project EDI (European Data Incubator) aims to develop data-based business models and use new technologies across countries and industries. Over the last eight months, numerous teams from different European countries have addressed this issue.
“EDI has enabled us to transform our business”
As part of the EDI Demo Day on May 7 at the wavespace Berlin, 6 finalists pitched their data-driven business models based on different data sets from companies and institutions such as Volkswagen Navarra and the TU Berlin. Welcoming 100 investors, founders, mentors and media representatives, there was space to exchange ideas about the concepts and possible synergistic effects. In the coming months, the startups will now focus on networking with corporates and institutions.
Explore, Experiment, Evolve
The EU’s EDI Programm is aiming to incubate 140 big-data startups from across Europe over the next 2.5 years and to support them with a funding volume of 5 million euros. The program is organized into three batches of nine months each, divided into three incubation phases: Explore, Experiment, Evolve. Digital Consultancy and startup builder etventure is an implementation partner and supports the teams to develop through coachings and workshops.
With the EDI Demo Day, the current round was successfully completed. Subsequently, the European Data Incubator is calling now for the next round. Startups can apply for more than 20 new Data Challenges in areas such as sports or energy until June 19th 2019. Data sets are provided by companies and institutions such as the originally subsidiary of Migros Switzerland, Migros Ticaret, and the Technical University of Berlin. Initially, 45 startups will be selected and receive the first funding of 5,000 euros. In the second phase “Experiment”, 16 startups will be particularly selected regarding their prototypes and sponsored with 80,000 euros each. In the third phase “Evolve”, the startups are supported in successfully launching their business models and initiating matchmakings and partnerships.
